Estimates use 2026 US retail pricing for big-box stores and online suppliers. Lumber and steel prices swing 20-30% seasonally. Coastal areas and dense urban markets typically run the high end of this range; rural areas with local lumber yards run the low end.

How to read these numbers

The estimator uses 2026 US retail pricing — the kind of numbers you get walking into Home Depot, Lowes, or buying mesh from McMaster, TWP, or Cutting Edge. Lumber pricing is the biggest swing: 2x4 PT pine has been anywhere from $4 to $9 in the last five years, so the ±20% low/high range exists to cover that volatility plus regional variance. Coastal cities and dense urban markets run the high end; rural areas with local lumber yards run low.

The biggest hidden costs in any aviary build are foundation prep and the door. A poured concrete slab can quietly add $500-1,500 once you factor in re-bar, formwork, and pre-mix bag rental — if you go gravel-over-fabric and skip the slab, you save real money but commit to annual top-up. The door is where 70% of escapes happen: build a double-door entry vestibule from day one or you'll add it as an expensive retrofit later.

For materials, match the mesh to the species. 1/2" hardware cloth (19-gauge galvanized) is the right call for finches, budgies, and lovebirds. 1" welded wire is fine for medium parrots and saves 20-30% — but it lets mice in, so wrap the bottom 30 cm in 1/4" cloth or run an outer skirt. For macaws, cockatoos, and Amazons, the only mesh that survives the beak is stainless steel. Galvanized after weld (GAW) lasts longer than galvanized before weld (GBW); avoid PVC-coated mesh entirely as the coating chips and gets eaten.

Hiring out adds 50-100% over materials in most US markets. The math frequently favours DIY for first-time builders if you have a weekend and a circular saw — but a contracted galvanized-steel build with a concrete slab will outlast three DIY rebuilds in pressure-treated lumber. Decide based on how long you plan to keep birds, not just the up-front number.
