Why captive lifespan varies so much
For almost every species the captive lifespan range spans 2x — a budgie can live 7 or 14 years, an African Grey 40 or 60. The difference between the low end and the high end is mostly diet, mostly environmental toxin avoidance, and mostly preventative vet care.
The single most impactful change for the median bird is moving off a seed-only diet. The second is removing aerosol exposures (Teflon-coated cookware, scented candles, cigarette smoke, plug-in air fresheners). The third is annual bloodwork — by the time a parrot shows symptoms of liver disease, kidney failure, or chronic infection, the disease has usually been progressing for months.
For breeders these numbers also matter for stock retirement. A pair's most fertile years sit roughly between 30% and 70% of their lifespan. Push past that and clutch sizes drop, hatch rates fall, and chicks weigh less at fledge. The lifespan ranges above are also implicit guides to when birds should retire from breeding.
