In human years

26 yrs

Cockatiel, 5.0 years old · life stage: young adult

Captive lifespan range: 1525 years.

How this works: the first year of life packs in roughly 10 years of human-equivalent development for any species (rapid maturation, sexual maturity, fledging). After year one, we scale linearly using an 80-year human reference lifespan against the average captive lifespan for the species. A 5-year-old budgie therefore reads older than a 5-year-old macaw — even though both share a calendar age.

A simple way to think about bird age

Birds compress an enormous amount of development into their first year. Most species fledge within weeks, reach sexual maturity within a year, and are functionally adult by their first birthday. That's why the first year scales differently from the rest: it's closer to a human's 0–18 in biological terms.

After the first year, ageing slows and scales roughly with lifespan. A budgie's decade is similar to an 80-year human life; a macaw's decade is similar to a 14-year human stretch. The calculator handles this scaling so you can compare a 5-year budgie to a 5-year macaw on the same biological axis.

For breeders, this is useful when planning pair retirement and assessing fertility decline. For pet owners, it's a quick sanity check that a parrot is a multi-decade commitment — your "teenage" macaw is barely two years old.
