How to pick a name that sticks
The best bird names are short, distinct, and contain crisp consonants. Birds recognize patterns in sound, not letters — so “Coco” (two strong K-sounds) and “Pippin” (P-P) cut through ambient noise far better than soft names like “Lily”. Talking species often learn to mimic their own name within weeks and love hearing it answered back.
Try saying each candidate out loud in the tone you actually use to call your bird across the house. Names that feel awkward when projected (“Cleopatra! Get off the curtain rod!”) usually get shortened or replaced within a month. The favourites that survive years are almost always one or two syllables.
