How these numbers are derived

Every recommendation here is the larger of two numbers: the minimum that lets the bird extend its wings without striking the cage, and the floor a major breeder association recommends for that species (RSPCA, AFA, German VDW, etc). Where those sources disagree we pick the more conservative figure — your bird's welfare is not where you economise.

For breeding setups we add height for the nest box plus working room beneath it. For flight aviaries we lengthen the longest dimension to give meaningful wing-strokes; this is where most pet-store cages fail.

Bar spacing matters too. A 4 mm-banded budgie chick can squeeze through 1.6 cm bars; a cockatoo will pop the welds on light cages. Match bar gauge to the species, not just the size.
