What a 4-generation pedigree actually tells you

A pedigree isn't paperwork — it's the only way to know whether the chick in front of you is the result of careful planning or accidental line-breeding. Three generations is the bare minimum to spot duplicate ancestors. Four lets you compute a meaningful inbreeding coefficient and gives you a fighting chance of predicting recessive expressions before the eggs hatch.

For show birds and serious breeding programmes, four generations is also what most associations require on paperwork. Buyers will ask for it. Judges will check it. If you're selling chicks, this is the document that justifies the price difference between a hand-fed pet bird and a pedigreed breeding prospect.

Use the colour / mutation field to record exactly what each ancestor expressed — visual mutations and known splits separated by a slash. The clearer your inputs, the more useful the resulting chart is when planning the next pairing.
